Erich von Stroheim
Αυστροαμερικανός σκηνοθέτης, ηθοποιός και σεναριογράφος (1885–1957)
Erich von Stroheim was a renowned Austrian-American film personality, born in 1885, who made significant contributions to the world of cinema as a director, screenwriter, actor, and producer. His most notable works date back to the silent era, where he established himself as a visionary and avant-garde filmmaker. One of his most iconic films, Greed, released in 1924, showcased his exceptional directing skills, despite the original nine-hour footage being heavily edited to a mere two-and-a-half hours against his wishes.
Von Stroheim's career as a director was marred by conflicts with Hollywood studio executives over budget and labor rights issues, leading to a decline in his directing opportunities. However, he successfully transitioned into a respected character actor, particularly in French cinema. His acting prowess earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1950 film Sunset Boulevard. Von Stroheim passed away in 1957, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering filmmaker and talented actor, with his film Greed being regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
