Judah ben Kalonymus ben Meir
Judah ben Kalonymus ben Meir was a prominent figure in the Jewish community of Speyer, hailing from the esteemed Kalonymus family. As a dayyan, he played a significant role in the judicial and religious aspects of his community. His scholarly pursuits led him to become a pupil of the renowned Ephraim of Regensburg, under whose guidance he developed his expertise in Talmudic and midrashic studies.
Judah ben Kalonymus ben Meir's literary contributions are notable, particularly his work Seder Tanna'im ve-Amora'im, which cataloged the tannaim and amoraim. This work, preserved in manuscript form at the Bodleian library and later published by Steinschneider, showcases his lexicographical skills. Additionally, he authored tosafot, providing insightful commentary on Talmudic texts. Although his dictionary, Sefer ha-Agron, which explored the fauna, flora, and minerals mentioned in the Talmud, has been lost, his existing works demonstrate his dedication to the study and interpretation of Jewish texts.
