Peter Demetz

American literary scholar (1922–2024)

Peter Demetz was a renowned American literary scholar, born in 1922 in Prague. His early life was marked by persecution under the Nazi regime, and he later escaped the Communist regime in 1949. Following his escape, Demetz worked in Germany as a teacher and radio journalist before emigrating to the United States in 1952. He pursued further studies and began his academic career at Yale University in 1956.

Demetz went on to hold distinguished positions, including Sterling Professor at Yale University and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Rutgers University. In addition to his academic work, he also established himself as a literary critic, contributing to prominent German publications such as the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung from the 1970s onwards. His notable literary work includes the 1997 book "Prague in Black and Gold: Scenes from the Life of a European City", which showcases his deep understanding of European history and culture. Demetz passed away in 2024, leaving behind a legacy as a prominent scholar of German literature.
