Uriel da Costa

Πορτογάλος φιλόσοφος

Uriel da Costa was a prominent Portuguese-Jewish philosopher of the early 17th century. Born into a New Christian family, he later reverted to Judaism, sparking a period of intense philosophical inquiry. As he delved deeper into the principles of his adopted faith, da Costa began to challenge the established orthodoxies of both Catholicism and rabbinic Judaism. His critiques of these institutions would ultimately lead to significant backlash against him.

Da Costa's unorthodox views and writings led to severe consequences, including the placement of his books on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a catalog of prohibited works. Furthermore, several Jewish authorities issued excommunications against him, underscoring the depth of opposition to his ideas. The cumulative effect of these pressures appears to have taken a profound toll on da Costa, who tragically took his own life around 1640, bringing an end to a life marked by intellectual courage and unyielding conviction.
